Beyond Geology …

Depression between Tampakan and Kiblawan is a scarred of good size asteroid way back million years ago. Minerals mostly cooper and gold were the major composite deposited at the depth of 400-800 feet or more due to impact. These are the depth of open pit that will be urging the miner to excavate further for good yield. Can you imagine the gigantic depth and opening shall be done? At the depth of 40-90 feet lays the aquifer those sustain the streams origin naturally will be altered … dried up to mud cake as miner pursuit the endeavor for more. One may not comprehend or understand how aquifer behaves. Now, after 5 to 10 years operations, ground will be loosened (result from blasting and stock files) and with the absence of vegetation, what shall be the result during the heavy rainy season? Most likely everyone has the basic knowledge.

Proof of asteroid impact is that mostly rocks are turn upside down from 30 to 45 degrees at the perimeter of the depression, a tell tales of huge explosion. Most likely the comprehension of layperson are ambiguous but in the mind of mining operator focuses on this mechanism.

And for those who does not know the site, it is the sources of river tributaries, and to name few, are Lambayong and Liberty streams joining downstream feeding NIA irrigation for Koronadal farmlands, Malungon stream is from there, stream feeding southern part of Davao del Sur and stream flowing to Columbio down to Buluan lake.

Siltation will surely affects these tributaries into mud cakes, not mentioning the lead/mercury poisoning downstream and run-off will cause flush flood due to loose soils. No great deal for those people who are not from these areas, for just aiming for employments. I grew up there and pity those people who shall be victims of the project.
We must understand that “Mining Work Plans” are just icing of the cake to obtain “Notice to Proceed” order but the cake itself has different color. Experience taught us that neither mining nor logging entities fulfilled to deliver half of their projected benefit to the communities concern. And you may ask why? Because the operators are all on profit-oriented scheme and are not from those areas of concerns.

Like SMI/Xstrata motive is to acquire enormous gain and trickle benefit to influence areas just to sustain their activities. We should remember that the mechanics of operation is capitalism and not on humanitarian scene. Benefit is just a drop in the bucket, temporary and can never compensate the destruction caused to the ecosystem.

Look what happened to Marindoque, Fly River in PNG, Nauru, Wellis & Fortuna islands in the South Pacific just to mention the few. Most likely lean benefit shall sustain only during operation … about 80 years and what will happen after then? By the way … SMI is just an implementing partner of foreign-owned interest to legalize the operation. In a shorter term ... a crony who has no interest in the welfare of the concern areas.
