South Cotabato, Philippines – A 1.2-kilometer back-to-back bamboo dike has been established along a vulnerable stretch of the Silway River in Barangay Simbo, Tupi, South Cotabato, to reduce soil erosion, stabilize riverbanks, and support the restoration of erosion-affected areas.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Siegfred Flaviano said using bamboo for riverbank protection provides a locally appropriate approach to addressing erosion while supporting the rehabilitation of vulnerable portions of the river.
“The bamboo dike was established to help protect the Silway River from further erosion and stabilize its vulnerable riverbanks. This initiative also strengthens the provincial government’s commitment to practical, sustainable, and nature-based environmental interventions that help protect our waterways and surrounding communities,” Flaviano said.
The Office of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer of South Cotabato funded the project, with support from the Local Government of Tupi, as part of ongoing efforts to protect waterways through practical, nature-based environmental interventions.
The installation involved using a water pump to excavate holes in the riverbank soil. They then properly embedded and secured bamboo poles to form the protective structure along the identified portion of the riverbank.
“The intervention aims to reduce soil loss from water movement, strengthen vulnerable sections of the riverbank, and help restore areas that have already experienced erosion,” Flaviano explained.
The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer of Tupi, Lowie John Lomboy, emphasized the project’s importance to the community and to protecting the riverbank.
“The bamboo dike will provide an added layer of protection to the riverbank and the communities in the area. By addressing the risk of erosion through preventive measures, the project can help lessen potential damage and reduce the need for more extensive interventions should a disaster or similar incident occur,” Lomboy said.
The collaboration between the provincial and municipal governments demonstrates the importance of coordinated environmental management in addressing concerns affecting local communities and natural resources.
The Silway River is an important waterway that passes through several communities in South Cotabato and neighboring areas. Environmental management efforts along its banks help protect and maintain the river system.
The use of bamboo also complements South Cotabato’s broader environmental initiatives involving bamboo as a nature-based material for riverbank stabilization and erosion control. The province has previously implemented indigenous dike projects using bamboo and other locally available materials to reinforce vulnerable waterways.
The initiative supports the Provincial Government of South Cotabato’s commitment, under the leadership of Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr., to responsive public service, environmental protection, and community-centered governance. By addressing environmental risks through practical interventions and coordination with local government units, the province continues to pursue measures that protect communities and sustain natural resources.
The completed bamboo dike is expected to provide continued protection to the identified section of the Silway River while contributing to the gradual stabilization and restoration of its vulnerable riverbanks.
