South Cotabato, Philippines — A total of 16 farmers’ associations in South Cotabato recently benefited from a livestock dispersal program of the Provincial Government, aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods and boosting agricultural productivity.
In partnership with the Department of Agriculture Region XII, each of the 16 farmers’ associations received ten (10) upgraded goats, composed of eight (8) does and two (2) bucks. This standard breeding ratio is designed to maximize productivity and ensure sustainable herd growth among beneficiaries.
Dr. Byron F. Dela Cruz, Provincial Veterinarian, emphasized the long-term impact of the program on rural development.
“This livestock dispersal is not just about providing animals—it is about creating opportunities for our farmers to build sustainable livelihoods. With the proper breeding ratio of 8 does and 2 bucks, we are ensuring productivity, herd expansion, and ultimately, increased income for our beneficiaries.”
The Livestock Livelihood for Smallhold Farmers (LLS) Program focuses on improving the genetic quality of livestock, increasing the production of goat meat and milk, and providing smallholder farmers with an additional and reliable source of income.
By equipping farmer groups with quality breeding stock, the initiative promotes a more systematic and efficient approach to livestock raising at the community level.
He also highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration.
“Through strong partnership with national agencies and the consistent support of the provincial government, we are able to deliver programs that directly uplift the lives of our farmers and strengthen the agricultural sector.”
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that the goats will serve as valuable starting capital that can multiply over time and help support their families.
The initiative forms part of the province’s broader strategy to promote inclusive growth, enhance food security, and strengthen agriculture as a key driver of the local economy. Through continued livestock development and farmer support programs, South Cotabato remains committed to building resilient and empowered farming communities
