Based on the 2024 Census of Population, South Cotabato recorded an annual population growth rate (PGR) of 0.84%, showing a decline compared to the 1.35% rate posted in 2020. The census results indicate a slower but consistent demographic trend across the province, with varying growth rates observed among its municipalities and city.
The municipality of Tupi reported the highest growth rate at 1.64%, making it the fastest-growing locality in the province. It was followed by Tantangan at 1.45% and T’boli at 0.99%. Other municipalities that recorded relatively high PGRs include Norala with 0.92%, Lake Sebu with 0.88%, and the City of Koronadal with 0.78%.
In contrast, Surallah posted the lowest growth rate at 0.55%, closely followed by Polomolok at 0.56% and Banga at 0.63%. The rest of the municipalities, such as Tampakan, Sto. Niño, and others, reported rates ranging from 0.73% to 0.74%, contributing to the overall average provincial growth.
The variation in growth rates across the province reflects multiple factors including internal migration, access to basic services, economic activity, and the implementation of population management and family planning programs. The Office of the Provincial Population Officer has acknowledged these figures as critical indicators for refining development plans and responding to changing community needs.
These results highlight the need for a balanced approach to governance and policy development that considers both high-growth and slow-growth areas. Sustained collaboration between local government units, the academe, and civil society remains vital to achieving equitable service delivery and supporting the province’s long-term development goals. The 2024 PGR data will serve as an essential tool in planning and implementing population-responsive programs for the province.
