710 square meters of water weeds cleared from Lake Sebu

LAKE SEBU, South Cotabato — A total of 710 square meters of floating water weeds was removed from Lake Sebu during a clean-up drive led by the Office of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer, helping protect the lake and support local livelihoods.

The clean-up was conducted at Lot 70 in Isla Tebowow, Poblacion, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato by the Forest and Inland Water Management Division of OPENRO.

The fast-spreading water plant can cover large portions of the lake, blocking sunlight, lowering oxygen in the water, and affecting fish and other aquatic life.

If not removed, it can also disrupt boat travel and impact the livelihood of fisherfolk and tourism workers who depend on the lake.

Siegfred Flaviano, Provincial Environmenet and Natural Resources Officer said the clean-up helps improve water flow, maintain water quality, and protect the lake’s ecosystem. It also makes travel safer for residents and visitors in Lake Sebu, one of the province’s major eco-tourism destinations.

Field workers Bromel, Roel, Aldin, and Jakery were recognized for their work during the operation.

Last December, 51,500 square meters of floating weeds from Lake Sebu and Lake Selotoninwere cleared.

OPENRO said that in 2018, the team cleared more than two hectares of Lake Sebu cleaned of water lilies.

The Provincial Government of South Cotabato said it will continue environmental protection efforts to preserve Lake Sebu and support communities that rely on its resources.
