KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — The South Cotabato provincial government is currently studying the establishment of a cancer center as part of its planned expansion of healthcare services, following the rollout of free dialysis centers in the province.
Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. said the initiative is being considered to further strengthen the province’s “cashierless” healthcare system and extend support to cancer patients who still need to travel outside South Cotabato for treatment.
At present, free dialysis services are already available in the province, providing significant relief to patients requiring regular treatment.
The provincial government now aims to replicate this level of support for individuals battling cancer.
Among the proposals is the construction of a dedicated cancer center that will offer services such as diagnosis and treatment within the province.
The plan is expected to reduce the need for patients to seek care in other areas, particularly in Davao City.
The development is also aligned with the recent designation of the SOCCSKSARGEN General Hospital as an Apex Hospital, which is being eyed as the main site for expanded specialized services, including cancer care.
“Target talaga natin ‘yan, para hindi na kinakailangang pumunta pa ng Davao City,” Tamayo said.
The proposal remains under evaluation as the provincial government continues to assess resources and long-term sustainability for the program.
