Tantangan, South Cotabato – The Dairy Cow Milk production initiative of the Animal Production and Demonstration Center (APDC) is making a significant impact in addressing malnutrition among children in identified areas of South Cotabato, according to Dr. Kelvin Lucena, Veterinarian IV and in-charge of the APDC.
Lucena said that the collaborative effort between the Provincial Nutrition Committee and the Provincial Veterinarian Office/Animal Production and Demonstration Center aims to provide a vital source of nutritious milk to children suffering from acute malnutrition and undernutrition.
“The initiative forms part of ongoing community outreach programs driven by the provincial government to combat malnutrition and improve child health outcomes in the region,” Lucena said.
Currently, two dairy cows under the APDC produce an average of eight liters of milk daily, which is distributed to the identified children in need. This steady supply of fresh, nutrient-rich milk plays a crucial role in the nutritional rehabilitation efforts within the province.
The Provincial Nutrition Office plans to expand the milk production program by introducing a module to study and develop milk processing from buffalo and domestic goats. This expansion aims to increase the milk supply, providing a broader range of nutritious dairy options to further support malnourished children across South Cotabato.
“With the proposed expansion, we hope to reach even more children and help improve their health and well-being.”
This program highlights the provincial government’s ongoing commitment to addressing public health challenges through innovative and sustainable solutions, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support they need.
