Dog impounding facility to anchor South Cotabato’s fight against rabies

South Cotabato, Philippines – As part of its continuing efforts to eradicate rabies and promote responsible pet ownership, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato is set to open a Dog Impounding Facility in Polomolok, the Office of the Provincial Veterinary Officer confirmed.

“Eventually, pag operational na ang ating Dog Impounding, doon natin gagawin yung Trap, Neuter/Castrate and Release through Adoption. Part ng Dog Impounding ang TNVR,” explained Dr. Dela Cruz.

South Cotabato has three dog impounding facilities located in the towns of Surallah, Tupi, and the soon-to-open facility in Polomolok.

The establishment of the impounding facility aims to help manage the stray dog population—one of the leading contributors to the spread of rabies.

“Impounding stray animals, conducting castration or neutering, and promoting adoption, the program ensures a more sustainable and humane approach to rabies control,” he stressed.

This initiative also complements other ongoing programs of OPVet, such as free vaccination of dogs and cats and information and education campaigns (IEC) across municipalities.

The Dog Impounding Facility is not just an infrastructure project but also a commitment of South Cotabato to safeguard both animal welfare and public health.

“Through the facility, the province hopes to strengthen its goal of creating rabies-free communities while encouraging responsible ownership among pet lovers,” he added.

The province’s rabies prevention initiatives are anchored on national and local policies, particularly the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007, with South Cotabato adopting its provisions through Ordinance No. 5, series of 1999.

Further strengthening these efforts, Executive Order No. 38, series of 2017, established the Provincial Rabies Prevention and Control Committee to institutionalize programs that safeguard both human and animal health.
