Family Planning Awareness Campaign Reaches South Cotabato Communities

South Cotabato, Philippines— The Office of the Provincial Population Officer (OPPO) has rolled out four Population and Development (PopDev) activities in selected municipalities, reaching expectant mothers, parents, and students through targeted learning sessions aimed at improving family health and well-being.

In Barangay Silway 8, Polomolok, fifteen pregnant women participated in an “Usapang Buntis” session that covered maternal health and prenatal care. The participants received information on proper nutrition during pregnancy, safe delivery practices, and early childhood care, with facilitators addressing health-related concerns raised during the session.

“We want expectant mothers to feel empowered with accurate information on pregnancy and childcare. This knowledge will not only help ensure safe deliveries but also promote healthier beginnings for their children,” said Melanie Chiva, Provincial Population Officer.

In Barangay Tubeng, Tupi, a Responsible Parenting Seminar was conducted for Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries. The session highlighted positive parenting techniques, family planning options, and the role of parents in guiding children toward responsible behavior. Participants actively shared their experiences, enriching the discussion with practical approaches to family life management.

“Responsible parenting is not just about providing for children’s needs—it’s about nurturing values and guiding them to make wise life choices,” Chiva emphasized.

In Norala, two Adolescent Health and Development (AHD) Film Dissemination sessions were held at Simsiman Integrated School and Sergio L. Legayada National High School, involving a total of 148 students. The films highlighted the risks of early pregnancy and unsafe sexual practices. Facilitators then led discussions to strengthen the students’ life skills, including decision-making, goal-setting, and self-protection.

“The youth need access to correct and age-appropriate information to protect their future. By strengthening their life skills, we help them make informed decisions,” Chiva noted.

According to Chiva, these initiatives are part of the PPO’s sustained efforts to bring population education directly to local communities.

“By addressing the needs of mothers, parents, and young people, we are laying the foundation for healthier families and preparing the next generation for a secure, well-planned future,” she concluded.
