Koronadal City, South Cotabato-Four Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) from the South Cotabato Rehabilitation and Detention Center (SCRDC) proved that prison walls are not barriers to education and personal transformation after successfully graduating from college through a special learning program.
The four graduates marched proudly alongside regular students at Green Valley College during the school’s commencement exercises held at the South Cotabato Sports Complex recently, marking a milestone not only in their lives but also in the province’s continuing commitment to rehabilitation through education.
The graduates earned their degrees in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Marketing Management under a modular learning program designed to provide educational opportunities for individuals inside detention facilities.
According to Provincial Jail Warden Barney Condes, the achievement of the four graduates serves as proof that determination and perseverance can overcome even the most difficult circumstances.
“The graduation ceremony became an emotional and inspiring event as the four PDLs, wearing their togas and holding their diplomas, symbolized hope, redemption, and second chances,” Condes said.
The initiative reflects the rehabilitation-centered programs of SCRDC, which aim not only to secure detainees but also to prepare them for reintegration into society through skills development and education.
“Through partnerships with academic institutions such as Green Valley College, PDLs are given opportunities to continue learning and develop a sense of purpose while inside the detention facility,” he shared.
The program also received strong support from Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr., who has consistently promoted education as one of the province’s major priorities.
Under his administration, educational access and inclusive learning opportunities have been expanded to reach various sectors of society, including persons deprived of liberty.
