South Cotabato, Philippines-Gender equality and the protection of women’s rights continue to gain stronger support inside the South Cotabato Rehabilitation and Detention Center (SCRDC) as the facility formally opened its celebration of National Women’s Month, highlighting the importance of empowering women and promoting respect within correctional institutions.
The activity forms part of the nationwide observance of women’s month across the Philippines every March, a time dedicated to recognizing the contributions of women in society and advocating for gender equality. Inside the SCRDC, the event emphasized the institution’s commitment to ensuring that women deprived of liberty and female personnel are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.
According to Provincial Jail Warden Barney Condes, discipline among personnel plays a critical role in building a culture of respect within the detention facility.
“Discipline in the facility is essential because this is where respect begins not only for women but also for men,” Condes emphasized during the opening ceremony.
He explained that the SCRDC continues to implement programs that promote equality and protect the rights of all persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), regardless of gender. Through these initiatives, the facility aims to create an environment that encourages respect, fairness, and rehabilitation.
The celebration also highlighted the detention center’s broader mission: to reform and rehabilitate inmates so they can eventually reintegrate into society as responsible citizens.
Condes stressed that gender-sensitive policies and programs help foster a humane correctional environment that supports the emotional, social, and psychological development of PDLs.
Various activities are expected to be conducted throughout the month to promote awareness of gender equality and women’s rights within the detention facility, he said.
“These initiatives include educational discussions, values formation programs, and activities that highlight the important role women play both inside and outside the correctional system,” Condes explained.
The SCRDC administration noted that recognizing women’s rights inside detention facilities is crucial because it ensures that female detainees receive proper care, protection, and opportunities for personal development while serving their time.
The implementation of gender-responsive programs within the facility is aligned with the directive of Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr., who continues to advocate for programs that strengthen women’s empowerment and gender equality in the province.
Governor Tamayo has consistently supported initiatives that promote the welfare of women and ensure their rights are protected in various sectors of society, including government institutions and correctional facilities.
The governor emphasized that gender equality is not only about recognizing the role of women but also about building a culture of respect and fairness for everyone.
Through the continued support of the provincial government and the dedication of jail personnel, the South Cotabato Rehabilitation and Detention Center aims to remain a facility that upholds human dignity while preparing inmates for a better future beyond detention.
As the Women’s Month celebration continues, the SCDRC hopes to inspire both personnel and inmates to promote equality, mutual respect, and social responsibility values that are essential in building stronger and more inclusive communities
