Gov. Tamayo clarifies use of ₱50M loan, hits back at online misinformation

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Philippines | December 16, 2025 — Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. clarified that only ₱50 million out of the ₱1-billion loan facility approved in 2018 has been utilized by the Provincial Government of South Cotabato, countering online claims questioning the use of public funds and alleging excessive borrowing.

According to Governor Tamayo, the ₱1-billion loan was approved prior to his term, but was not immediately drawn or spent, stressing that the provincial government exercised restraint and prudence in accessing the loan.

“We are very careful in ensuring that the money of our people is protected,” the governor said, emphasizing that the province did not rush into loan utilization without first studying its economic impact.

Addressing the question circulating online—“Where did the ₱50 million go?”—Governor Tamayo explained that the amount represents only a partial drawdown of the approved loan, used while the province awaits the approval of major priority projects, particularly in the health sector.

The P50M loan went to upgrade and rehabilitate the South Cotabato Sports Complex track oval.

During the recent press briefing with the governor, he explained that approximately ₱49.996 million (around P50 million) was used for the rehabilitation of the existing rubberized track oval.

“Financial support was drawn from the provincial budget following approval by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, with possible augmentation from the ₱1-billion omnibus loan earmarked for sports infrastructure development,” he shared.

The project finished in March 2025, just in time for the SOCSKAREGN Regional Athletic Associaiton (SRAA) meet.

The rehabilitation is part of Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr.’s “Legacy Projects” to boost sports development, create a healthier province, and prepare for hosting major events like the Palarong Pambansa.

The governor noted that additional loan utilization is being considered only after thorough economic evaluation, ensuring that any amount borrowed translates into long-term public benefit.

“We are looking at the economic benefits of any possible loan. If we get a loan, it must provide proper and lasting services to our people,” he said, adding that the remaining loan balance remains unused and pending.

Governor Tamayo also dismissed claims circulating online that the province has been sitting on unpaid loans for several years, calling them fake news. He clarified that the ₱1-billion loan has not been fully consumed, and that responsible fiscal management remains a cornerstone of his administration.

“We ask for patience and understanding,” the governor said.

He said that every peso is studied, every project is evaluated, and we make sure, “that what we spend today will truly benefit our people tomorrow.”
