Gov. Tamayo flags teacher shortage as top concern

South Cotabato, Philippines | January 28, 2026 -Since Gov. Tamayo assumed office in 2019, record showed a lack of teachers in government schools.

Records from the Office of the Provincial Administrator–Provincial School Board, in coordination with the Provincial Human Resource Management Officer, show a steady and strategic increase in PSB personnel from 2019 to 2026.

According to Provincial Administrator Atty. Renette B. Bergado, the continuous hiring reflects the Governor’s vision of inclusive growth anchored on education.

“Strengthening both teaching and non-teaching personnel ensures that our schools are not only centers of learning but also safe and well-managed spaces for students,” she said.

From 113 personnel in 2019, the PSB workforce rose to 529 by 2025, including four mobile teachers to sustain investment in education services and school-based support.

Under Governor Tamayo’s leadership, the province has strengthened schools by deploying PSB-paid teachers to complement the teaching force of public schools in far-flung barangays where schools rely heavily on provincial support to function effectively.

Cherry Abantao, Administrative Officer IV, said that in the first semester of 2026, the province has already boarded 50 additional PSB-paid teachers.

“Another batch of hires is set within the year, further easing classroom congestion and improving daily school operations,” she said.

Abantao pointed out that with these concrete actions, South Cotabato reinforces its commitment to a responsive and resilient education system—one that prioritizes learners, supports educators, and builds stronger communities through quality public service.

“Governor Tamayo continues to expand the PSB workforce, directly addressing the growing needs of schools across the province,” she added.

This reality reinforced the administration’s decision to prioritize the hiring and support of teachers, ensuring that more students receive quality instruction.

Through this approach, Governor Tamayo has demonstrated a people-centered vision for education—one that goes beyond physical infrastructure and invests in the human resources that truly shape the future.

By strengthening the teaching workforce, the provincial government continues to lay a solid foundation for long-term educational development in South Cotabato.
