Gov. Tamayo strengthens rabies prevention efforts with construction of dog impounding facilities

South Cotabato, Philippines — To further reduce animal bite incidents and strengthen rabies prevention measures across the province, Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr. affirmed that the Provincial Government of South Cotabato has been actively constructing dog impounding facilities in various municipalities.

In a recent statement, Governor Tamayo emphasized that the construction of these facilities demonstrates the province’s proactive approach in promoting responsible pet ownership and safeguarding public health.

“We are already constructing dog impound facilities, and most of them are nearly complete. It is now up to the Local Government Units [municipalities and cities] to implement their ordinances. As for the Provincial Government, our action was to build these facilities so that there will no longer be any problems,” Governor Tamayo said.

These dog impounding facilities aim to support Local Government Units (LGUs) in the proper enforcement of their animal control ordinances, ensuring stray dogs are safely captured, vaccinated, or impounded when necessary.

When asked about the possibility of establishing a dog impounding facility in Koronadal City, Governor Tamayo expressed full support for the initiative, highlighting the province’s readiness to assist the city government in addressing its needs.

“Yes, if needed, since we also coordinate with the City Government. It really depends on their request. We are always ready to help ensure that their ordinances are properly implemented. The Provincial Government of South Cotabato is prepared to address all of these concerns!” he said.

The Provincial Government continues to collaborate with city and municipal governments to strengthen animal control programs, intensify vaccination drives, and promote community awareness on rabies prevention.

Governor Tamayo reiterated his administration is committed to public health and safety, emphasizing that proactive governance and inter-agency coordination are key to maintaining a rabies-free South Cotabato.
