Koronadal City, South Cotabato | August 18, 2025 — Although the 2028 national elections are still years away, the name of South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr. is already being floated as a potential contender for a national post.
When asked by media about his readiness to run for higher office, Governor Tamayo acknowledged that the matter will be discussed within his party, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas.
“The party hasn’t talked about it, but as of now, what we see is that the next national leaders may come from local government units. People are looking for leaders with good track records and solid performance at the local level,” Tamayo said.
According to him, many citizens have grown critical of some current national leaders, which has opened the possibility for provincial officials with strong records to step onto the national stage. Tamayo’s name has been mentioned not only because of his role as the incumbent President of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, but also due to his governance style and programs in South Cotabato.
Online discussions have highlighted his clean political record and effective implementation of flagship initiatives such as Free Hospitalization, Free Education, infrastructure development projects, and other ongoing programs in the province. Supporters also point to his efforts in showcasing the benefits of a federal form of government, which has been piloted in South Cotabato through localized policies that residents have come to appreciate.
Despite the growing speculation, Governor Tamayo clarified that his priority remains on South Cotabato.
“For now, my focus is to continue and complete the programs we have started under the brand ‘Tama kag Maayo nga Serbisyo.’ That is my commitment to the people of South Cotabato,” he emphasized.
Whether Governor Tamayo will eventually seek a national post in 2028 remains to be seen, but his name is already among those being watched closely as the next elections approach.
