Health frontliners sharpen emergency nutrition skills in lifesaving programs

Tupi, South Cotabato Philippines | October 4, 2025 — In an effort to enhance disaster preparedness and protect vulnerable communities during emergencies, the Municipality of Tupi successfully combated a three-day Nutrition in Emergencies and Information Management Training Course from October 1 to 3, 2025, held at the Tupi Municipal Training Hall.

The training gathered over 30 participants, including Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), municipal health workers, and local disaster risk reduction officers. Spearheading the initiative was Nutrition Officer I Noeleen P. Dumadag, who emphasized the critical role of nutrition in emergency response.

“Our goal is to ensure that nutrition remains a priority before, during, and after disasters,” Dumadag stated.

She said the training equipped the frontliners to manage nutrition services even in times of crisis.

Throughout the course, participants learned to conduct rapid nutrition assessments, manage information during emergencies, and develop community-specific action plans.

They were also introduced to the Nutrition Cluster Coordination System and the Monitoring and Evaluation of Emergency Feeding Programs, which are essential tools in responding to disasters such as floods, landslides, or prolonged droughts.

Interactive workshops allowed participants to simulate real-life scenarios and practice data gathering, analysis, and reporting using updated information systems.

Each barangay team presented a localized Nutrition in Emergencies plan on the final day, which will be integrated into their Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plans (BDRRMP).

The training was conducted in coordination with the Provincial Nutrition Office and the National Nutrition Council and supports South Cotabato’s broader efforts to institutionalize nutrition in local governance.

“We are building a stronger, more responsive community—one that puts the health and nutrition of every resident at the center of its emergency response,” Dumadag shared.
