The Office of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (OPENRO), in partnership with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office of Lake Sebu and the Upsilon Sigma Fraternity, conducted a Tree Growing Activity in celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, reinforcing efforts to protect the environment through community participation and sustainable conservation initiatives.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Siegfred Flaviano emphasized the importance of collective efforts in protecting natural resources and strengthening biodiversity conservation across communities.
“Environmental protection requires collective action. Through this activity, we are strengthening community participation in biodiversity conservation while ensuring that future generations will continue to benefit from a healthier and more sustainable environment,” Flaviano said.
Carried out under the theme, “Acting Locally for Global Impact,” the activity highlighted the importance of grassroots action in addressing environmental concerns and preserving biodiversity through meaningful local interventions.
“The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness, encourage stronger community involvement in ecological conservation, and contribute to the preservation and restoration of the local environment through sustainable tree planting efforts,” he said.
Volunteers from participating agencies and organizations joined hands in planting tree seedlings in identified areas in Lake Sebu to support reforestation and environmental rehabilitation.
As one of South Cotabato’s environmentally significant areas, Lake Sebu plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, watershed protection, and biodiversity conservation. Through collaborative activities such as tree growing, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato continues to strengthen environmental programs that encourage public participation while addressing the growing need for environmental protection and climate resilience.
The initiative also reflects the continuing commitment of Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. to people centered governance by supporting programs that create long term benefits for communities, improve environmental sustainability, and encourage active partnerships among government agencies, civic organizations, and local stakeholders.
OPENRO said the activity serves as a continuing reminder that local action plays a crucial role in protecting ecosystems and advancing global environmental goals. By engaging communities and partner organizations in conservation efforts, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato continues to foster environmental responsibility while promoting sustainable development for present and future generations.
