South Cotabato, Philippines — The Provincial Veterinary Office of South Cotabato continues to intensify its preparations against the possible effects of the upcoming El Niño phenomenon through strengthened information campaigns, livestock support, and farmer assistance programs.
According to Kelvin A. Lucena, Animal Production Chief, the province is not only conducting Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities but is also providing biologics and veterinary support supplies to help farmers protect their animals during extreme heat conditions.
“Aside from IEC campaigns, we are also providing biologics as preparation for the upcoming El Niño. We are ready, and we have electrolytes and multivitamins that will be distributed to farmers for their livestock,” Lucena said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ella Rose Frugalidad, Veterinary Officer II, encouraged farmers to enroll their livestock in the insurance program of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to ensure financial assistance in case of livestock mortality caused by disasters or extreme weather conditions.
“Farmers were advised to coordinate with their respective Municipal Agriculture Offices for enrollment and proper guidance regarding livestock insurance coverage,” she said.
Frugalidad also reminded livestock raisers to immediately report any unusual animal deaths or suspected disease outbreaks to barangay biosecurity officers or local barangay officials to allow immediate response and appropriate intervention from veterinary authorities.
The Provincial Government of South Cotabato continues to strengthen preventive measures and support systems to safeguard the livestock industry, ensure food security, and protect the livelihood of local farmers amid climate-related challenges.
