South Cotabato, Philippines — As part of the continuing effort of the Provincial Government to strengthen livelihood opportunities and food security in the province, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian – Animal Production and Development Center (APDC) distributed goats to members of the Solo Parent Group in Barangay Cabuling, Tantangan.
The initiative was implemented in line with the directive of Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. to further enhance livelihood programs and improve food security across communities in the province.
Recently, a total of 27 solo parent beneficiaries received three (3) goats each, which will serve as starter livestock for their small-scale animal production. The distribution was facilitated by Mr. Allan Omar W. Castillo, Agricultural Center Chief II, and Mr. Harold M. Hechanova, Livestock Inspector II of the Animal Production and Development Center.
The program provides sustainable livelihood opportunities for solo parents by enabling them to start and manage their own livestock production. Through goat raising, beneficiaries are expected to generate additional income and improve their household food security.
According to Kelvin Lucena, the animal dispersal program is designed to create long-term economic benefits for beneficiaries.
“The animal dispersal program transforms a single animal into a sustainable production cycle. By providing the initial breeder, we empower farmers to build a diversified livestock portfolio—meaning they aren’t just raising one animal for sale, but are managing a growing herd that acts as a ‘living savings account,” Lucena explained.
He further emphasized that beyond providing livelihood, the program contributes to broader poverty reduction efforts in the province.
“On the other hand, this program also creates a significant impact on poverty alleviation,” he added.
Through initiatives like the livestock dispersal program, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato continues to promote inclusive development by supporting vulnerable sectors such as solo parents and strengthening community-based livelihood programs.
