Rabies awareness strengthens public health education in South Cotabato

South Cotabato, Philippines — In line with the observance of Rabies Awareness Month 2026, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian – South Cotabato successfully conducted a Forum on Rabies Awareness and Responsible Pet Ownership at Sto. Niño National High School, engaging 209 students in a meaningful discussion on rabies prevention and animal welfare.

According to Byron F. Dela Cruz, Provincial Veterinarian, rabies remains a serious public health concern but is entirely preventable with proper intervention.

“Ang rabies kapag nasa tao na ay wala nang lunas, ngunit ito ay 100% preventable through vaccination. Kaya mahalaga ang pagbabakuna ng mga alagang hayop at ang agarang pagre-report sa Animal Bite Treatment Center kapag may kagat ng hayop,” he emphasized.

The initiative forms part of the province’s continued effort to promote public health and safety under the leadership of Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr., whose administration prioritizes community awareness programs that protect the welfare of every South Cotabateño.

Leading the forum was Dr. Ramelo G. Quinton, who facilitated an interactive learning session focused on the nature of rabies, its transmission, and the crucial role of responsible pet ownership in preventing the spread of the disease. Students were educated on the importance of regular vaccination for pets and the immediate steps that must be taken in the event of animal bites.

Dela Cruz also underscored the importance of strengthening public awareness campaigns during Rabies Awareness Month.

“Layunin ng Rabies Awareness Month na mas maipaliwanag sa publiko kung ano ang rabies at kung paano ito maiiwasan. Sa pamamagitan ng patuloy na edukasyon, mas mapapalakas natin ang kaalaman ng komunidad laban sa sakit na ito,” he added.

The forum highlighted the life-saving impact of sustained vaccination campaigns for pets and reinforced the shared responsibility of communities in preventing rabies transmission.

Through initiatives like this, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato continues to advance its mission of building safer, healthier, and more informed communities across the province.

As the province observes Rabies Awareness Month, residents are encouraged to participate in vaccination drives, practice responsible pet ownership, and immediately seek medical attention in case of animal bites.
