SCRDC PDLs craft parols as source of livelihood and hope this Christmas

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato |November 13, 2025— As the Christmas season approaches, the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the South Cotabato Rehabilitation and Detention Center (SCRDC) are once again showcasing their craftsmanship through parol-making, an annual livelihood activity that continues to provide them with purpose and income while serving their sentence.

The parol-making project, initiated by the SCRDC management, aims to help PDLs develop practical skills, promote productivity, and support their families through honest means.

The handcrafted lanterns, made from locally sourced materials, vary in size and design — with prices starting at ₱1,500.

In an interview, Alias Jason, a PDL , said the activity has given them something meaningful to look forward to inside the facility.

“Here inside, it feels good that we’re doing something meaningful. It’s like we still have direction,” he shared.

He added that the project has allowed him and his fellow PDLs to remain productive and hopeful.

“This isn’t just for ourselves. This is a big help to our family because we can also contribute, even in a small way,” he said.

Aside from parols, the PDLs also create other handmade crafts such as alkansiya (coin banks) and decorative items, which are also open for sale to the public.

Joanne Lazaga, Prison Guard III, said the SCRDC management welcomes partnerships and orders from individuals, offices, and organizations who wish to support the livelihood of the PDLs.

“Proceeds from the sales are directly given to the makers, helping them sustain their basic needs and send assistance to their families,” Lazaga shared.

This initiative forms part of their continuing rehabilitation program.

Lazaga pointed out the SCRDC wanted the PDLs to realize that even while serving their sentence, they can still contribute something positive to society.

For inquiries and purchases, the public may contact the SCRDC office directly.

“As lights from these parols brighten homes this Christmas, they also illuminate the hopes of those who crafted them , a reminder that even behind walls, the spirit of giving and redemption continues to shine,” Lazaga added.
