South Cotabato bags national awards for ASF recovery and surveillance

South Cotabato, Philippines — South Cotabato earned two major recognitions during the Animal Health Congress 2025 held at the Manila Prince Hotel: The Excellence in ASF Surveillance Award and the Remarkable Recovery from ASF Award.

The AHC, supported by the DA–BAI, FAO, and international partners, gathers animal health experts nationwide to promote stronger biosecurity and disease prevention.

According to Dr. Ella Rose C. Frugalidad, Veterinarian II, the province was recognized for achieving 50% municipal compliance in active ASF surveillance. “All municipalities in South Cotabato have undergone the Recognition for Active Surveillance (RAS ASF). In fact, 100% completed the process, and they comply yearly because they understand its importance. RAS ASF is required for backyard hog growers to transport their hogs.”

South Cotabato also stood out for its successful ASF recovery. “We are among the provinces that completed the recovery process to yellow status. All our municipalities are now in the yellow zone. In fact, we have one municipality that maintained its green zone status—the Municipality of Polomolok,” Dr. Frugalidad added.

The agency reminded the public of required documents for hog movement, including Veterinary Health Certificates, RAS ASF, CFS ASF, and shipping permits.

Dr. Frugalidad also urged travelers to avoid bringing leftovers or pork dishes from ASF-infected areas back to the province.

The awards were received by Dr. Ella Rose C. Frugalidad, representing the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian.

The Provincial Government thanked all municipalities, veterinary staff, and hog raisers for their collective effort, emphasizing that the recognitions highlight the province’s unity and dedication in strengthening its livestock sector.
