South Cotabato bolsters emergency readiness with addition of SAR Dogs

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — The Provincial Government has added two newly trained search-and-rescue (SAR) dogs to its disaster response team under the Office of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (OPDRRMO).

According to OPDRRMO report, the SAR dogs will be deployed alongside trained emergency responders, ensuring a coordinated and timely approach to rescue missions.

South Cotabato bought Belgian Mallinois breed which is leading choice for search and rescue, police, and military work, the report revealed.

The dogs cost at least P700, 000.

These canine units are trained to detect human scents in tough environments, making rescue operations faster and more efficient during landslides, earthquakes, and missing person searches.

Because South Cotabato has many mountains and forests that are hard to reach—especially during heavy rains—these SAR dogs are a strategic addition. They can find victims in areas where traditional search methods often struggle.

According to the OPDRRMO, this initiative is part of a continuing effort to strengthen the province’s disaster readiness.

Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. reaffirmed his commitment to a safer province, noting that investing in modern rescue tools and highly trained personnel is essential for protecting high-risk communities.

With these SAR dogs, the Provincial Government expects faster response times and more successful rescues, proving its proactive approach to saving lives.
