South Cotabato Boosts Rice Yield, Aligns with National Import Ban

Koronadal City, Philippines| August 12, 2025 – Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr., commended the decision of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to halt the importation of rice in the Philippines, especially during the harvest season.

According to the governor, it is essential to understand how to balance demand and supply in the agricultural sector to maintain stable rice prices in the market.

Magpo-produce tayo ng sobrang daming bigas, at pag nagkaroon ng importation, kawawa ang mga magsasaka,” the governor said, emphasizing that importation should never coincide with local harvest periods.

He added that Filipinos must recognize and support decisions that are both relevant and responsive to the needs of consumers and farmers.

Governor Tamayo also provided an update on South Cotabato’s rice consolidation program, which has shown remarkable progress. The province is now achieving average yields of 8 to 10 tons per hectare, a significant improvement from the previous 4 tons per hectare.

“The cost to produce a kilo of rice is currently estimated at ₱5 to ₱6, allowing farmers to earn substantial income when sold at ₱10 to ₱12 per kilo,” the governor pointed out.

To support and sustain this growth, Governor Tamayo stressed a three-sectoral approach focused on:

  1. Planting
  2. Production and Post-Harvest Facilities
  3. Marketing

He also shared that the province is awaiting the completion of a post-harvest facility, which will serve as a storage hub for rice after harvest.

“Excess rice is stored in silos and used during lean months when there is no harvest.

It will help stabilize supply and control prices,” he explained

Governor Tamayo attributed the ongoing success of South Cotabato’s rice production to the strong partnership between the Local Government Unit (LGU) and the National Government, ensuring a unified and strategic approach to agricultural development.

“With the right decisions made at the right time, we can empower our farmers, ensure food security, and stabilize rice prices for everyone,” Tamayo concluded.
