South Cotabato intensifies road checkpoints to counter deadly animal diseases

Koronadal City—The Provincial Veterinary officials here alerted its checkpoint in Polomolok to prevent entry of hand-carried meat from tourists disembarking at the General Santos Port following on the outbreaks of the deadly African swine fever disease.

However, the Bureau of Animal Industry announces the Philippines is still free from the deadly animal disease, adding that, “it is not a threat to human life.”

With local police, PVET plans to conduct a seizure of “hot meat” after series of information campaign last year.

“Madamo na pasaway. Hindi na makaya sang IEC at warning lang,” Meat Control Officer Dr. Bayron dela Cruz said in an interview.

Countries affected with ASF are China, Hungary, Belgium, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Moldova, South Africa, and Zambia.
