South Cotabato kicks off women’s month with gad symposium for male drivers

KORONADAL CITY , SOUTH COTABATO PHILIPPINES | MARCH 11, 2026 – The Provincial Government of South Cotabato officially kicked off the 2026 Provincial Women’s Month Celebration with a Gender and Development (GAD) Symposium for Men yesterday.

The activity highlighted the importance of recognizing women’s rights and contributions in the community while encouraging men to become active partners in promoting respect and safety.

The event was led by Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. and organized by the Office of the Provincial Population Officer headed by Provincial Population Officer Melanie C. Chiva, MPA.

Chiva explained why the symposium focused on men rather than women.

“Many cases of harassment and disrespect toward women involve men, making it important to educate and engage them in discussions about gender sensitivity and responsible behavior,” She emphasized.

The symposium featured two main topics aimed at empowering participants with knowledge and responsibility.

The session covered Republic Act 11313, also known as the Safe Spaces Act or the “Bawal Bastos Law.”

Presiding Judge Marie Jean B. Merañez of the 5th MCTC Malita–Sta. Cruz, Davao Occidental served as the guest speaker. She emphasized the important role of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations (TODA) in promoting safe and respectful public spaces not only in Koronadal City but across the entire province of South Cotabato. The discussion covered topics such as public spaces, gender-based online sexual harassment, and other forms of harassment addressed under the law.

“ Kayo ang naging beneficiaries’ para sa  Gender and Development  symposium na ito kasi kong mapapansin natin most of the time mga Kalalakihan ang Perpetrators”. Merañez stated

Around 130 tricycle drivers and 10 traffic enforcers from Koronadal City attended the seminar.

Other session was focused on Defensive Driving, which discussed traffic laws, road safety practices, and responsible driving behavior.

Mr. Herson R. Bito-on, a Driving NCII Trainer, served as the resource speaker and reminded drivers of their role in ensuring safety on the road.

Meanwhile, TESDA South Cotabato also provided services during the event, offering free haircuts, manicures, and pedicures to the participating tricycle drivers.

According to Jonel D. Ladrillo, Vice President of TODA in Koronadal City, the symposium was a big help for drivers.

He said the orientation strengthened their knowledge and reminded them to become responsible and respectful representatives of their community.
