South Cotabato Launches Mental Health Module for Parents and Adolescents

October 2025 | South Cotabato — With the rising number of suicide cases among youth, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato, through the Office of the Provincial Population Officer (OPPO), has launched a Mental Health Module for Parents and Adolescents, the first of its kind in Region XII.

Melanie C. Chiva, OPPO Head, said that 18% of suicide cases recorded in the province involve individuals aged 19 and below, with the youngest case being 12 years old.

She described this as “a wake-up call” for communities to prioritize open communication, family connection, and mental health support.

“Today’s generation faces pressures amplified by social media and technology. Many youths struggle silently, and some parents are unaware of their children’s emotional battles,” Chiva explained.

The module provides guidance for program implementers, parents, and educators on recognizing warning signs, promoting mental wellness, and offering first-line support.

It includes psychological first aid principles and positive parenting strategies designed to rebuild trust and communication within families.

OPPO is also strengthening partnerships with Department of Education, barangay councils, and local health offices to conduct community-based mental health education and stress debriefing activities.

The office’s Mental Health Advocacy Program complements its ongoing initiatives in Responsible Parenthood, Family Planning, and Adolescent Health and Development.

Chiva underscored that mental well-being starts at home — when parents find time to listen and connect with their children.

“We used to fear monsters from stories; now our youth face real-life fears — isolation, depression, and hopelessness,” Chiva said. “We must bring back genuine connection inside our homes.”

The initiative supports Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr.’s administration’s commitment to strengthen mental health awareness and promote emotional well-being among families and young people.

The Provincial Government urges families to value mental health as much as physical health, reminding every parent that understanding, not judgment, saves lives.
