South Cotabato launches preparations for free housing project

Koronadal City, South Cotabato, Philippines| August 22, 2025 – The Provincial Government of South Cotabato is currently preparing for the implementation of Free Housing Project, the newest flagship program promised by Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr.

According to Governor Tamayo, the search is ongoing for suitable land to establish the project. Among the proposed locations are two-hectare lots in the municipalities of Tantangan and Banga, as well as other potential areas in the province. These sites are currently being evaluated by the Office of the Provincial Assessor.

The governor assured that the initiative will provide free housing and land to qualified beneficiaries, particularly those living in calamity-prone areas. To protect recipients’ rights, a legal agreement will prohibit the sale or transfer of the property, allowing only inheritance within the family.

“We are creating an agreement that they cannot sell the property, and inheritance will be limited to family members,” Governor Tamayo said.

The Free Housing Project is a pioneering program in South Cotabato, inspired by Governor Tamayo’s earlier initiative in Tupi, where he distributed 200 free homes and lots to families during his tenure as mayor.

“In Tupi, we built 200 houses and distributed them for free. Families only had to pay monthly electricity and water bills, but the house and lot were completely free,” he recalled.

The provincial government envisions the project as a means to strengthen household stability and enhance community security.
