South Cotabato, Philippines —The Province of South Cotabato has been recognized as a national model in healthcare delivery after earning top distinction under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 3, or Good Health and Well-being, for its implementation of a free hospitalization program.
The province was named among the SDG Achievement Champions by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), highlighting its exemplary efforts in expanding access to essential health services.
The recognition stems from the province’s Free Hospitalization Program, launched in July 2019, which provides cost-free medical services, including both inpatient and outpatient care, across government-run hospitals.
The initiative has significantly reduced the financial burden on patients while improving healthcare accessibility for thousands of South Cotabateños.
Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. emphasized that health remains a cornerstone of the province’s development agenda.
“Healthcare is not a privilege, it is a fundamental right. We will continue to strengthen programs that ensure every citizen, especially the most vulnerable, has access to quality medical services,” he said.
He further underscored the importance of institutionalizing healthcare initiatives to guarantee continuity and long-term benefits for constituents, regardless of changes in leadership.
The recognition affirms that people-centered governance, anchored on compassion and efficiency, can drive meaningful and lasting change, positioning South Cotabato as a benchmark for other local government units across the Philippines.
