South Cotabato PDRRMO urges preparedness as PAGASA issues El Niño alert

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — The Office of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (OPDRRMO) of South Cotabato has called on residents and communities to remain alert and prepared following an El Niño advisory issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA).

According to PAGASA, the advisory signals the possible onset of El Niño conditions in the coming months, which could bring warmer temperatures and reduced rainfall in several areas. Authorities clarified that the notice is precautionary, aiming at raising early awareness and encouraging timely preparation.

OPDRRMO Chief Rolly Doane C. Aquino emphasized that it continues to monitor developments closely and is urging the public to stay informed through official updates.

Residents are also encouraged to adopt simple precautionary measures, including conserving water and observing fire safety practices, especially as the heat index level is expected to rise.

Meanwhile, Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. also assured residents that the provincial government is fully prepared to respond should El Niño conditions affect the province.

Tamayo emphasized that contingency measures and coordination among local agencies are already in place to safeguard water supply, agriculture, and public health, ensuring that communities remain protected and supported.

The Provincial Government of South Cotabato reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety and strengthening community resilience amid changing weather conditions.

With the El Niño Alert Advisory from PAGASA, data suggest there is 79% chance that El Niño will happen in June-July-August (JJA) 2026 season and is likely to persist until early 2027.
