South Cotabato records 8 fireworks-related injuries, shows 43% decrease compared to last year

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — The Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (PESU) under the Office of the Provincial Health Officer has recorded a total of eight (8) fireworks-related injuries (FWRI) in South Cotabato from December 21 up to 6:00 AM of December 27, 2025, based on FWRI Surveillance Report No. 4.

Data show a 43 percent decrease in recorded cases compared with the same monitoring period last year, reflecting improved public awareness and strengthened safety campaigns during the holiday season.

According to PESU, the majority of the cases involved male patients (83%), with most incidents occurring inside their homes.

The injuries were commonly linked to the active handling of fireworks, including the use of illegal firecrackers.

Health authorities also confirmed that no fireworks-related deaths and no stray-bullet injuries were reported during the surveillance period.

Provincial health officials emphasized that while the decline in cases is encouraging, the public is urged to remain vigilant as New Year celebrations approach.

The Provincial Government of South Cotabato continues to remind residents to observe safety measures, including:

  • Avoiding the use of illegal fireworks
    Never allowing children to handle fireworks
    Ensuring close supervision of minors at all times
  • Opting for safer alternatives such as noise makers or organized community fireworks displays

Health authorities reiterated that responsible celebration plays a crucial role in preventing injuries and ensuring that the holidays remain joyful for everyone.

The PESU will continue to cosely monitor and report fireworks-related injuries as part of its commitment to safeguarding public health during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
