South Cotabato records strong health gains, health official reports

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato | January 26, 2026 — South Cotabato continues to show significant improvements in public health, with key indicators reflecting a healthier population across the province, according to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Conrado Braña.

Citing consolidated data from the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO), Dr. Braña said the province’s health status is backed by measurable declines in illness and mortality rates, demonstrating the effectiveness of sustained, people-centered health programs implemented by the Provincial Government.

“Our data clearly show that South Cotabato is in a healthy condition. These are not assumptions — they are supported by records and indicators gathered through our integrated health system,” Brana said.

Based on the latest provincial health records, the illness rate in South Cotabato has decreased by 12.9 percent, signaling fewer reported cases of common and preventable diseases. Meanwhile, the mortality rate dropped by 9.8 percent, indicating improvements in disease management, access to healthcare, and emergency response services.

One of the most notable indicators highlighted by the Provincial Health Office is the province’s infant mortality rate, which currently stands at 4.5 percent. This figure is considered within the acceptable range and is significantly lower than the national average of 19 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Dr. Braña emphasized that the low infant mortality rate reflects the success of maternal and child health interventions, including expanded prenatal care, skilled birth attendance, newborn screening, and continuous monitoring of mothers and infants, especially in rural and far-flung communities.

“These numbers reflect the collective efforts of our health workers, barangay health teams, and partner institutions. More importantly, they show that our programs are reaching families where they matter most,” he explained.

The Office of the Provincial Health Officer attributes these gains to strengthened preventive healthcare, early detection of illnesses, improved referral systems, and increased access to medical services at the community level. Health education campaigns and regular monitoring have also played a vital role in encouraging early consultation and healthier lifestyles among residents.

Dr. Braña noted that the province remains focused on sustaining and further improving these health outcomes through continuous data-driven planning, investment in health facilities, and capacity-building for healthcare workers.

“Our goal is not only to maintain these gains but to further lower illness and mortality rates. We want every South Cotabateño to have access to timely, quality, and affordable healthcare,” Brana added.

With reliable data guiding its strategies, South Cotabato continues to strengthen its health system, reinforcing its commitment to protecting the well-being of its people and ensuring long-term public health sustainability across the province.
