South Cotabato regains Avian Influenza-free status

South Cotabato, Philippines — The Province of South Cotabato has once again been officially declared Avian Influenza-free following the issuance of Department of Agriculture Memorandum Circular No. 26, Series of 2026.

The declaration came months after a confirmed case of Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, was recorded in the municipality of Norala in October 2025. Through the swift and coordinated response of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV), the province successfully contained and eliminated the threat, helping protect the local poultry industry and public welfare.

Under the leadership of Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr., the OPV worked closely with the Offices of the Municipal Agriculturists throughout the province and the Department of Agriculture Regional Office XII in implementing intensive disease control measures.

These measures included containment operations, depopulation procedures, surveillance activities, and thorough disinfection protocols in affected areas.

Provincial Veterinarian Byron F. Dela Cruz emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation among poultry raisers and the general public to sustain the province’s Avian Influenza-free status.

“This declaration is a testament to the strong collaboration among the provincial government, partner agencies, local farmers, and the community. We encourage everyone to continue practicing strict biosecurity measures and to immediately report any unusual illness or death among poultry and birds,” Dela Cruz said.

Authorities also reminded transporters and poultry raisers to strictly comply with animal transport protocols and health monitoring procedures to prevent the possible re-entry of the disease into the province.

The Provincial Government of South Cotabato expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to the successful containment efforts and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the province’s agriculture sector and ensuring food security.
