KORONADAL CITY — The provincial government of South Cotabato has reaffirmed its status as insurgency-free, following a recent armed encounter reported in Barangay Tibol, T’boli town.
Officials emphasized that the incident was isolated and does not reflect a resurgence of insurgent activity within the province.
Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. clarified that the individuals involved in the encounter were not residents of South Cotabato.
According to the governor, the armed group was merely passing through the boundary area between South Cotabato and the neighboring province of Sarangani when the clash occurred.
“Nananatiling insurgency-free ang South Cotabato. Ang kamakailang insidente ay dumaan lamang sa ating boundary at doon naganap ang kaguluhan. Ngayong tapos na ito, nananatiling mapayapa ang ating lalawigan at tuloy ang turismo.” Tamayo said.
Local authorities acted swiftly following the incident to ensure public safety and prevent any escalation. Security forces have since intensified monitoring in boundary areas, particularly in upland barangays that are geographically close to adjacent provinces.
The encounter also prompted precautionary measures from the municipal government of T’boli.
An executive order was issued temporarily closing Lake Holon, one of the province’s premier eco-tourism destinations, to any form of tourism activity. Officials said the move was necessary to guarantee the safety of visitors while security assessments were ongoing.
Provincial tourism officers are now working closely with local government units to determine the appropriate timing for the reopening of Lake Holon. Authorities are also coordinating with security forces to maintain a visible presence in key tourist areas as an added measure of reassurance.
South Cotabato has been recognized in recent years for its successful peace-building initiatives and strong collaboration between local government units, security sectors, and communities. The provincial government reiterated its commitment to sustaining these efforts to preserve stability and promote inclusive development.
