South Cotabato steps up tree planting and convergence for GIDA communities

Koronadal City, South Cotabato– Fresh from its November 7 tree planting and convergence operation in Sitio Sufo, Barangay Seloton Lake Sebu, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato is gearing up for a bigger inter-agency tree planting, gift-giving, and service caravan for geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) on December 10, 2025.

Project Development Officer II Cris Pingkunn Fuentes said the recently completed monthly activity in Sitio Sufo brought together provincial personnel and partners to rehabilitate upland areas and link basic services with environmental protection efforts.

“Through these regular tree planting and convergence operations, we are protecting our watersheds while making sure remote communities are reached by government services,” Fuentes said.

Every tree we plant contributes to long-term water security, climate resilience, and livelihood opportunities for our people, Fuentes explained.

Building on the November operation, Fuentes said the Provincial Government is planning an inter-agency event on December 10 that will combine tree planting, gift-giving, and the provision of frontline services, this time with the active participation of national line agencies.

“We want national government agencies to join the PLGU on the ground so they can see up close the realities in GIDA communities and help respond to them,” he shared.

This is our way of giving back to far-flung areas that often have the least access to services, he stressed.

According to Fuentes, the December 10 activity will also include a commitment-setting process among participating agencies, with the goal of making the convergence a regular annual undertaking every December, led by the Provincial Local Government Unit.

“Right now, we are finalizing the specific needs and priorities of the target communities so that the services and assistance we bring will match actual conditions on the ground,” he said.

Fuentes emphasized that these environmental and social convergence activities form part of a broader provincial strategy to combine climate action with social support, especially in remote sitios and barangays.

“When agencies work together around one shared objective uplifting our GIDA communities, people feel that the government is truly present and determined to ensure that no one is left behind,” Fuentes added.
