KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — The Provincial Government of South Cotabato is stepping up efforts to position the province as an emerging coffee shop hub in Region XII by strengthening partnerships among government agencies, coffee industry stakeholders, local entrepreneurs, and farmer organizations.
In a coordination meeting, representatives from the South Cotabato Enterprise and Investment Center (SCEIPC), Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Agriculture (DA), South Cotabato Barista Association (SCOBAR), and other stakeholders mapped out strategies to further develop the province’s coffee industry and promote locally produced coffee.
Coffee and Cacao Focal Person Marites Gumbao said the initiative includes consolidating industry data on coffee production, processing, coffee shops, and roasteries to strengthen South Cotabato’s bid as a recognized coffee-producing destination.
“We continue to see the growth of coffee enterprises and roasteries in Koronadal City, Polomolok, and Tupi, contributing to local economic activity and tourism development in South Cotabato,” Gumbao said.
She added that the province is also promoting coffee tourism, with locally roasted coffee now being served in more cafés, giving visitors the opportunity to experience South Cotabato’s distinct coffee identity.
According to Gumbao, Arabica coffee thrives in the highland areas of Mt. Matutum, T’boli, and Lake Sebu, while Robusta coffee is widely suited for Tupi, Tampakan, Surallah, Banga, and Polomolok.
“We may not compete in quantity, but we will focus on quality,” she emphasized.
Provincial officials said the initiative forms part of South Cotabato’s continuing efforts to expand market opportunities for coffee farmers, enhance agri-tourism, and establish the province as a premier destination for quality Philippine coffee.
