KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — The Provincial Government of South Cotabato is reinforcing its climate preparedness measures to safeguard communities amid projections of a possible El Niño later this year, in line with Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr.’s commitment to responsive and people centered governance.
This comes after the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration reported that while La Niña conditions are expected to persist until the June to August 2026 season, there is an increasing probability of El Niño developing as early as July to September 2026.
DOST-PAGASA raises its El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Alert and Warning System to El Niño Watch.
According to the agency, El Niño is associated with warmer than average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean and may lead to below normal rainfall conditions in some parts of the country, increasing the risk of dry spells and drought. However, above normal rainfall may still be experienced in the western portion of the country during the southwest monsoon season.
Governor Tamayo assured the public that the province remains in a stable condition at present and is fully prepared for any possible shift in weather patterns.
“Sa ngayon, nasa normal na cycle pa naman tayo at pumasok na ang summer season. Ngunit kung dumating man ang El Niño, handa naman tayo,” the governor said.
The provincial government continues to strengthen disaster preparedness and environmental programs to protect communities from climate impacts, through planning, resource allocation, and coordination with local and national agencies.
Officials stressed that early monitoring and preparation are key to reducing the effects of El Niño, especially on agriculture, water supply, and public health. As an agriculture-based province, timely support for farmers remains a priority to prevent losses and ensure food security.
The government also urges the public to follow official advisories and practice water conservation. Communities are encouraged to support local efforts on sustainability and disaster preparedness.
Through early action and awareness, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato continues to protect lives and livelihoods.
