South Cotabato strengthens rabies prevention through free pet health services

South Cotabato, Philippines — Pet owners in South Cotabato availed themselves of free veterinary services as the Provincial Government, through the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV), joined the observance of World Rabies Day on September 28, 2026.

The activity provided free rabies vaccination, deworming, and castration services for dogs and cats, aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership and strengthening efforts to prevent rabies in communities.

Veterinarian Dr. Ramelo Quinton emphasized that regular vaccination, proper pet care, and responsible ownership remain essential in protecting both animals and communities from rabies.

“Rabies is preventable, and vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect our pets and our families. Through activities like this, we are able to bring essential veterinary services closer to pet owners and encourage them to become more responsible pet owners,” Quinton said.

A total of 16 pet owners availed themselves of the free rabies vaccination, benefiting 12 dogs and 20 cats. Meanwhile, six owners brought their pets for free deworming, covering four dogs and six cats.

Seven pet owners availed themselves of the program, with three dogs and four cats undergoing the procedure.

For pet owner Isabel Borromeo, the free services provided an opportunity to have her pets cared for without the added financial burden.

“Malaking tulong po ito sa amin bilang pet owners. Bukod sa libre, natutulungan din kaming mas mapangalagaan ang kalusugan ng aming mga alagang hayop. Mas naging aware din kami sa kahalagahan ng vaccination at responsible pet ownership,” Borromeo said.

The World Rabies Day observance also highlighted the importance of collective action in preventing rabies, particularly through routine vaccination, responsible pet ownership, population management, and immediate consultation following possible exposure to rabies.

The activity reflects the Provincial Government’s continuing efforts to promote animal health and public safety by making essential veterinary services accessible to communities across South Cotabato.

World Rabies Day is observed every September 28 to raise awareness about rabies prevention and commemorate the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur, whose pioneering work led to the development of the first successful rabies vaccine.
