South Cotabato to auction properties with unpaid taxes on November 22

Koronadal City—The Provincial Treasurer’s Office of South Cotabato is set to conduct an auction to delinquent properties on November 22, Local Tax Operations Officer III Zenaida Erum confirmed during the Hinun-anon sa Tama kag Maayo nga Serbisyo.

At least 2000 random properties with unpaid taxes are being posted in a local newspaper recently, Erum said.

“We have released Notice of Delinquency to property owners to inform them of their tax due to the provincial government,” she said, stressing that series of pulong-pulong are also performed to every barangay as a strategy to strengthen the information dissemination.

Under the local government code, the local government unit (LGU) is authorized to auction delinquent properties in order to compel the entities to pay their tax obligations to the province.

Erum  said that they have been sending out notices to individual about their unsettled obligations.

Last year, PTO condonation of tax interest to properties  with tax arrears. This is the second time that the province conduced an auction sale of delinquent properties.

“We ask the public to visit your local treasurer’s office and pay your land taxes on time to avoid penalty,” she added.

The Local Government Code of 1991 prescribes that barangays get 25 percent of the basic real property tax imposed by the province and collected by the municipality.  As one of the major stakeholders, South Cotabato convinced barangay officials to assist in improving the collection of real property tax.
