South Cotabato -A spirit of peace and renewed hope filled the South Cotabato Rehabilitation and Detention Center as it formally opened its 2026 Sports Festival, highlighting the role of rehabilitation programs in fostering unity and emotional well-being among persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
The event, anchored on the theme “Strength Behind Walls: Unity and Teamwork Beyond Bars,” brought together PDLs, facility staff, and local officials in a celebration that went beyond competition serving as a platform for healing, camaraderie, and personal growth.
According to one participant, identified as Alias Akmad, the event created a rare atmosphere of happiness and peace within the facility. He shared that engaging in structured activities such as sports helped ease feelings of isolation and loneliness often experienced inside detention centers.
“Through these activities, we feel a sense of belonging and joy. It becomes something memorable that lifts our spirits,” he said.
The opening program also featured cultural performances and music that resonated deeply with the participants.
Adding to the uplifting atmosphere was the presence of Datu Khomieni Bansuan, known as the “King of Moro Song” and a former peace ambassador under the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process.
His performances brought inspiration and emotional connection, reinforcing messages of peace and unity.
Officials emphasized that initiatives like the sports festival are essential in supporting rehabilitation and transformation efforts within correctional facilities. These programs aim to instil discipline, teamwork, and a positive outlook among PDLs, preparing them for eventual reintegration into society.
The provincial government, led by Governor Renaldo S. Tamayo Jr., continues to support such initiatives.
Governor Tamayo, widely recognized for his advocacy for peace and inclusive development, has underscored the importance of programs that promote genuine change and sustainable rehabilitation.
The successful and peaceful opening of the sports festival stands as a testament to the power of community driven initiatives in transforming lives even within the confines of detention.
