Three LGUs in South Cotabato achieve largest poverty reduction according to PSA

KORONADAL CITY, SOUTH COTABATO — Three local government units (LGUs) in South Cotabato recorded the biggest decreases in poverty incidence from 2021 to 2023, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) 2023 Small Area Poverty Estimates (SAPE).

Data from the PSA showed that Lake Sebu Municipality had the most notable drop in poverty incidence, decreasing by 9.2 percentage points—from 42.1 percent in 2021 to 33.0 percent in 2023.

Following this, the municipality of Norala saw a 5.9 percentage-point decline, reducing its poverty rate from 18.8 percent to 12.9 percent during the same period.

Meanwhile, Tantangan experienced a 5.2 percentage-point reduction, from 21.3 percent in 2021 to 16.1 percent in 2023.

Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr., welcomed the latest PSA figures, calling the progress a clear sign that the province’s development strategies and poverty alleviation efforts are producing positive results.

“These figures affirm that when national and local governments collaborate with clear direction and strong political will, genuine improvements happen at the community level,” Governor Tamayo said.

The governor emphasized that the goal has always been to ensure development reaches even the most remote areas, especially those in greatest need.

The governor highlighted that the provincial government has consistently prioritized inclusive growth through ongoing investments in agriculture, education, health services, livelihood programs, and social protection, in close coordination with municipal LGUs.

“The reduction in poverty in Lake Sebu, Norala, and Tantangan shows the effectiveness of targeted interventions and responsive local governance. This encourages us to strengthen our programs and make sure no South Cotabateño is left behind,” he added.

Governor Tamayo also emphasized the importance of data-driven governance, noting that PSA statistics are essential guides in shaping policies and programs that meet community needs.

The South Cotabato Provincial Government remains dedicated to maintaining and expanding its poverty reduction efforts in line with the national development agenda, aiming for sustained, inclusive, and equitable growth across all LGUs in the province.
