KORONADAL CITY — The T’nalak Festival will push through as planned despite mounting economic challenges marked by rising fuel costs and increasing prices of basic commodities, the provincial government of South Cotabato has confirmed.
Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. assured residents and stakeholders that the celebration will continue, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage while navigating ongoing financial pressures.
According to the governor, the provincial government recognizes the strain brought about by the steady increase in fuel prices and the rising cost of essential goods, but remains committed to delivering both public services and community events.
“Hindi apektado ang serbisyo ng provincial government. Para sa ating mga festival-goers, tuloy ang kasiyahan,” Tamayo said.
The annual T’nalak Festival, held in Koronadal City, is one of the most prominent cultural events in the region. It showcases the rich traditions of South Cotabato’s diverse communities, particularly highlighting the artistry of the T’boli people through the intricate weaving of T’nalak cloth. The handwoven fabric, made from abaca fibers, is not only a symbol of cultural pride but also a vital source of livelihood for local artisans.
Despite these challenges, the provincial government is taking a balanced approach. Tamayo explained that careful financial planning and resource allocation are being implemented to ensure that essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure are not compromised.
Local officials believe that proceeding with the festival could stimulate economic activity by attracting tourists, boosting small enterprises, and generating income for vendors, performers, and artisans. Hotels, restaurants, and transport services are expected to benefit from increased visitor turnout, helping offset some of the economic slowdown.
Preparations are already underway, with organizers working to ensure that activities remain vibrant yet cost-efficient. Some adjustments are expected, including more streamlined programs and partnerships with private stakeholders to reduce expenses. However, officials have assured the public that the essence and spirit of the festival will remain intact.
