Women PDLs showcase talent and resilience in the SCRDC’s Women’s Month Celebration

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato – Creativity, resilience, and empowerment took center stage as Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) showcased their talents during the culminating activity of the National Women’s Month Celebration at the South Cotabato Rehabilitation and Detention Center (SCRDC).

With the theme “Lead like the Babaylans, Filipinas,” the event highlighted the strength and leadership of women through a series of performances and artistic displays. Female PDLs expressed themselves through mural painting, singing, and dancing, transforming the detention facility into a vibrant space of culture and hope.

The celebration was led by South Cotabato Provincial Jail Warden Barney Condes, who emphasized the importance of recognizing women’s contributions to society, regardless of their circumstances. “This activity is not only about celebration but also about recognition,” Condes said.

Despite being separated from their families, the PDLs found joy and a renewed sense of purpose through the program. Their performances reflected not only their talents but also their longing for connection and determination to rebuild their lives. “Women who have made significant contributions to nation-building deserve equal opportunities, respect, and dignity, whether inside or outside this facility,” Condes added.

The event also served as a tribute to iconic Filipino women leaders who have shaped the nation’s history. Among those remembered were Melchora Aquino, revered as the “Mother of the Philippine Revolution,” and Miriam Defensor Santiago, known for her integrity and brilliance in public service.

The program likewise honored two of the country’s most prominent female presidents, Corazon Aquino and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whose leadership symbolized the growing role of women in governance and nation-building.

Warden Condes extended his gratitude to the Provincial Government of South Cotabato, led by Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr., for its continued support of programs that promote gender equality and protect women’s rights.

He described the governor as a strong advocate for women, ensuring that even those in detention facilities are given opportunities for growth and empowerment.

The closing ceremony marked not just the end of a month-long celebration but also a reaffirmation of the importance of inclusivity and compassion within correctional institutions.

Through initiatives like this, SCRDC continues to provide a platform for women PDLs to express themselves, develop their talents, and feel valued despite their circumstances. As the echoes of music and applause faded within the facility walls, the message remained clear: every woman—free or incarcerated—has a voice, a story, and a vital role in shaping society.
