SoCot opens first-ever dog impounding facility

South Cotabato, Koronadal City-The Provincial Government of South Cotabato, headed by the Provincial Veterinary Officer Dr. Flora Bigot, pushed the first-ever local government-operated dog impounding facility located in Municipality of Surallah.

The operations of the dog pound will be managed by the municipal government of Surallah, through the municipal agriculture office, in coordination with the PVET.

It will initially accommodate stray dogs in Surallah and the nearby municipalities, to control the spread of the deadly rabies virus in South Cotabato.

The dog pound was designed based on the criteria set by Republic Act (RA) 8485, as amended by RA 10631, or the Animal Welfare Act.

Like any other dog impounding facilities, the owners would be required to pay necessary fees before they could take back their pet dogs.

Stray dogs are prone to rabies. Rabies is a life-threatening disease which animals, specifically dogs are the carrier of this disease. Animals with rabies transfer the virus to other animals and to people through saliva following a bite or a scratch.
