No new Mpox cases in South Cotabato, health official confirms

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato – There are currently no new recorded cases of mpox in South Cotabato, according to the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO).

Dr. Conrado Braña, Provincial Health Officer, reported that out of the total 11 confirmed cases in the province, six individuals have already recovered while five remain under monitoring.

“As of today, we have no new mpox cases. Out of the 11 confirmed cases, six have fully recovered and the remaining five are on their way to recovery,” Dr. Braña said.

He added that the cases in the province reflect national trends, where mpox transmission is commonly linked to direct skin-to-skin contact, particularly sexual contact.

“Take note of this. The transmission that we heard was identified through sexual contact and direct skin-to-skin contact,” Dr. Braña emphasized.

Dr. Braña also mentioned that many of the confirmed cases in the country involved individuals living with HIV. As of May 30, 2025, the Department of Health has reported a total of 119 mpox cases nationwide, with 65 recoveries.

“There is no declaration requiring the wearing of facial masks, but I strongly encourage the public to wear masks especially during large gatherings,” he said.

The provincial health office is continuing to implement minimum public health standards that were previously enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent further spread of the disease.

“We are practicing the minimum health standards that we have set up in the past,” Dr. Braña added, reiterating the importance of hygiene and public awareness.

The IPHO calls on the public to remain vigilant and informed about updates concerning mpox and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms occur.
