South Cotabato, August 15, 2024 — Eleven former members of the dismantled Guerrilla Front ALIB have voluntarily surrendered to the authorities, bringing with them six high-powered firearms. This significant development marks another step forward in the ongoing efforts to restore peace and order in South Cotabato.
Governor Reynaldo Tamayo, Jr. warmly welcomed the rescued friends who expressed their desire to rejoin the community.
In his message to the returnees, Governor Tamayo emphasized the importance of their decision to abandon the armed struggle and return to civilian life.
“It was your decision to really join, to really return to the community. So, it’s impossible that we won’t be able to solve your problems if you only bring your concerns. So, there’s no reason for us to fight,” the governor said, highlighting the province’s readiness to address the needs and concerns of those who choose the path of peace.
The governor’s message reflects the province’s holistic approach to peacebuilding, where dialogue and support are prioritized over conflict. As more former rebels choose to return to the fold, the local government of South Cotabato remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering peace and development for all its citizens.
The surrender took place in an undisclosed location, where the returnees handed over four M14 rifles, one carbine, and one Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR). The event was overseen by local military officials, who praised the returnees for their decision to lay down their arms and reintegrate into society.
Brigadier General Andrie Santos, 1st Mechanized Brigade, Philippine Army, expressed optimism for the future of the returnees.
“I recommend that these friends rescued be enrolled in the ECLIP program of South Cotabato Province, ” he said when he presented the friends rescued to the governor.
The Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) offers various benefits, including financial assistance, livelihood opportunities, and access to education, to former rebels who choose to reintegrate into mainstream society.
This recent surrender underscores the effectiveness of the government’s continuous efforts to encourage former rebels to rejoin society, offering them the opportunity to live in peace and contribute positively to their communities.
