South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr. has responded to recent comparisons of Mindanao being referred to as the “Sub-Saharan” region of the Philippines, a term that often highlights economic and development disparities.
In a statement, Governor Tamayo acknowledged these perceptions but remained firm in emphasizing the potential and progress of Mindanao.
“Yun ang pagtingin nila, pero alam natin yung potentials meron tayo,” he stated, underscoring the region’s vast opportunities for growth, development, and investment.
Tamayo highlighted the rich natural resources, agricultural strength, and skilled workforce of Mindanao, which continue to drive its economic development. He pointed out that while challenges remain, the local and national government, along with private sectors, are actively working to improve infrastructure, boost industries, and uplift communities.
“Mindanao is more than just a comparison. It is a land of promise, and we are proving that every day with our efforts in governance, livelihood programs, and infrastructure development,” Tamayo added.
The governor also called for unity and collaboration among stakeholders to change the narrative surrounding Mindanao. He reiterated his commitment to inclusive growth, peace-building efforts, and sustainable development, ensuring that Mindanao reaches its full potential.
