The provincial government through the Provincial Environment Management Office (PEMO) will conduct the 4th Recyclable Waste Fair on November 28 in celebration of National Environment Awareness Month.
PEMO’s Senior Environment Management Specialist Nencita Acain disclosed that the Waste Fair aims to create awareness to the public on the importance of recycling as stipulated under Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
“Recycling waste products could help reduced waste, so residual waste left to be dump to the Sanitary Landfill will be minimal. Besides, may pera sa basura (There is money in recycled waste),” Acain added.
Acain enjoined the public to deliver their “junks” or residual wastes to their buying station, of which the specific venue will be announced later by their office.
Local junk shop operators in Koronadal City and other areas such as General Santos City and Davao City will be invited by PEMO to join the “buying” of junks during the whole-day Waste Fair.
During the previous waste fairs, buyers bought tons of junks especially papers, bottles, car batteries, metal products and computers.
PEMO plans to repeat the same feat with the support of schools, other stakeholders and the general public.
The province’s waste fair started on December 8, 2008 and was institutionalized every two years thereafter.
Aside from National Environment Awareness Month, November is also celebrated every year as Climate Change Month and Clean Air Month by environmentalists.
