South Cotabato reaps ₱13 Million in economic gains from national tourism convention

Koronadal City, South Cotabato — The recently concluded national convention of the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP), held in South Cotabato in October, brought an estimated ₱13 million boost to the local economy, marking a successful showcase of the province’s tourism and cultural heritage. The four-day event attracted around 1,500 tourism officers and industry participants from across the country.

Francis Cerbo, Tourism Operations Officer I, provided a breakdown of the convention’s economic impact. The accommodation sector alone generated ₱4.11 million, as participants spent four nights in various hotels, inns, and lodges throughout the province.

“The influx of visitors was a huge benefit for our local hospitality industry. It demonstrated South Cotabato’s capacity to host large-scale national events,” said Cerbo.

The ATOP convention also sparked substantial activity in local “pasalubong” centers, with participants purchasing a variety of cultural products. Sales of T’nalak cloth, Tabih cloth, and other indigenous crafts and accessories brought an estimated ₱3 million in revenue. This was a strong boost for local artisans and small businesses, helping promote South Cotabato’s distinct cultural heritage.

The convention’s organizers further contributed to the local economy by spending ₱5 million on event logistics, including the rental of convention spaces, catering, and transportation for cultural tours. Buses and vans transported participants to key cultural sites, showcasing the beauty of South Cotabato’s natural landscapes and heritage spots.

Governor Reynaldo Tamayo, Jr. expressed optimism about the province’s potential for hosting more large-scale events in the future.

“These national conventions highlight the economic opportunities South Cotabato can offer to MSMEs and local artisans. We’re preparing to welcome more national events to provide even more avenues for economic growth,” he said.

In September and October alone, South Cotabato hosted several major events, including the Vice Governors’ League of the Philippines convention, the National Indigenous Peoples Gathering in Lake Sebu, and the ATOP convention. These gatherings have provided substantial economic benefits, reinforcing South Cotabato’s status as an emerging destination for national and cultural events.
