Promoting Gender Equality: A Collaborative Effort Based on Community

The Provincial Population Office (PPO) and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), in collaboration with the Lake Sebu Indigenous Women’s Weaver Association, Inc. (LASIWWAI) and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), held a Gender Orientation Seminar in Barangay Klubi, Lake Sebu. The event drew 107 participants, 51 men and 56 women, including couples, parents, and other community stakeholders.

The seminar aimed to raise awareness and understanding of gender issues while also encouraging mutual respect and inclusion. One of the main topics of discussion was Republic Act 11596, which protects minors from early and forced marriages.
Participants talked about the significance of allowing young individuals to pursue their aspirations before considering marriage.

Additionally, PMSG Margarette G. Dema-Ala from the Philippine National Police (PNP) South Cotabato led a session on the Anti-Rape Law (Republic Act 8353). The discussion emphasized the importance of preventing gender-based violence and safeguarding individual rights through legal frameworks and community initiatives.

This initiative reflects the government’s and partner organizations’ ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality and community development. Through education and open dialogue, such efforts help challenge societal norms and promote equal opportunities for all community members.
